Waterproof Boat Covers

If a reputable custom canvas cover maker has properly measured and made your covers, they will most likely fit well.  Make sure you are present when they come to install the covers for the final time. If there are any questions as to the proper fit of your covers you need to point this out to them and ask them to make any adjustments.

It is very important the covers fit snugly onto the various parts of the boat that are being covered. If the covers are too loose they will not properly protect these areas and may come loose very easily. This may cause them to be blown off and lost. Aesthetically speaking, loose covers look very sloppy. Nice, properly fitted covers add to the clean look of your boat and add value as well as protection. If it seems that the cover is much too loose or too tight, you should make sure that the right cover is on the right part of the boat. Multiple window covers can get mixed up easily so make sure that you have each one in it's correct position (this includes making sure the right side is up) See our page multiple cover tips for really useful information.

Covers that are too tight can be a huge problem. Each cover should fit the area of the boat well without too much strain to fit it. It has been our experience that covers that are too tight will make any varnished areas such as handrails wear quicker. This is a shame because well-fitted covers protect varnished areas from the suns U.V. rays as well as other elements. So you don't want to trade something that is supposed to be an advantage into a disadvantage. Also, multiple covers are usually directly attached to the boats surface and cover that is too tight will put a strain on these attachments.

Often when there are multiple covers on a boat, one of the ways that the covers are attached with snaps. Snaps are beneficial in that they are easy to use, as long as they are fitted well. Make sure the part of the snap that is attached to the boat itself is secure and tight and in a position that won't be easily snagged by ropes or by your clothes as you walk by.  An example of this fit is a window cover. The cover should fit flush to the window, attach easily to the snaps, and will not have to be over-stretched to reach the next snap.

Once you have determined that the covers fit properly make sure you have a system in place as to how to uncover and recover your boat. See our "tips" section for some great strategies.
